The Significance Of Muharram
Muharram is one of the most important months in the Islamic calendar, marking the start of a new Islamic year. Our history is rich, and many key events happened during the sacred month of Muharram:
The Story Of Prophet Musa (AS)
In this blessed month, Allah (SWT) granted victory to Prophet Musa (AS) and Bani Israel (Children of Israel) by parting the Red Sea, allowing them to escape the tyranny of Pharaoh.
The Ark Of Prophet Nuh (AS)
It was in Muharram that the ark of Prophet Nuh (AS) came to rest on Mount Judi, signifying a new beginning and the mercy of Allah (SWT) after a period of great trial and tribulation.
The Repentance Of Prophet Adam (AS)
Allah (SWT) accepted Adam’s (AS) repentance after he committed the sin of eating from the forbidden tree in Paradise. This event highlights Allah’s (SWT) boundless mercy and forgiveness, reinforcing the importance of repentance and seeking forgiveness.
All of these key events signify a new beginning, as Muharram signifies the start of a new year.
The Importance Of Ashura
One of the most important days of the Islamic calendar falls on the 10th of Muharram: the day of Ashura.
Muslims are encouraged to fast on Ashura:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“Fasting the day of ‘Ashura’ (is of great merits), I hope that Allah will accept it as an expiation for (the sins committed in) the previous year.”
[– Muslim]
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, as narrated by Ibn Abbas (RA):
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fasted on the day of `Ashura’ and ordered the people to fast on it. The people said, “O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that the Jews and Christians honor.” The Prophet said, “When the following year comes, Allah willing, we shall fast on the ninth.” The death of the Prophet came before the following year.”
[– Muslim and Abu Dawud]
